Representation of women in the media
Females are usually shown in a stereotypical manner in the media. This is usually portrayed by showing the females as submissive and passive. Jeremy Tunstall came to the conclusion that women are shown in the media as busy housewives, contented mothers, eager consumers and sex objects. Research which was instigated in 1992, highlighted that men out screen females by two to one. For example in Disney films such as Aladdin or Beauty and the Beast, women are portrayed as exaggeratedly curvaceous, vulnerable, naive and slender, and how they rely on a authoritative male figure to command and dominate them, therefore enhancing the feeling of woman being submissive to the male race in media. Also from research which has been selected from adverts, it shows that males are more likely to be shown in advertisements as having occupations compared to females, males are also more likely to be shown away from home, and are more likely to be represented as authorities rather than consumers.
